Helen Hogg Hooper was the daughter of James Hogg of Hillsborough, NC; the widow of William Hooper (b. 1768), a merchant; and the mother of three sons: William, James, and Thomas Hooper. After Joseph Caldwell married Helen Hooper on August 17, 1809, he moved into her house in Chapel Hill (Vickers 28).
